Frequently Asked Questions

What can be improved with veneers?
  • Improve the color of your teeth.
  • Change the shape of the teeth.
  • Close spaces between teeth.
  • Repair fractured or worn teeth
  • Replacing old restorations that are no longer aesthetic
  • Improve teeth alignment

Depending on the amount of healthy tooth structure, your dentist will recommend one or the other. For example, sometimes there aren't enough teeth left after years of wear, making the placement of veneers very difficult. If this is the case, ceramic crowns are recommended. These crowns enclose the entire tooth, protecting the remaining tooth and also improving its aesthetics.

Not necessarily. But since we're working to ensure the color of the veneers matches the rest of your teeth, making them invisible and look natural, you may want to consider whitening them first, as you won't be able to do so later.

The number of days of whitening varies depending on the individual case. Most patients achieve a change within a month. Young teeth typically whiten very quickly; older teeth may require more time. The application time of the whitening gel varies depending on the product chosen in each individual case. Some teeth do not whiten evenly, particularly around receding gums or on the canines, which are naturally darker in color.

What is the difference between ceramic and resin veneers?

Composite veneers are usually made in a single visit. The dentist adds the composite in thin layers, gradually molding and hardening it. At the end of the process, they are shaped and polished. Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory. This type of veneer is more resistant to staining and discoloration, and their polish does not deteriorate over time. Porcelain veneers are made in two appointments.

Since porcelain doesn't stain or change shape, they can last for many years. However, like all restorations, veneers will need to be replaced over time. With proper care and maintenance, veneers will look great for 10-15 years, although they can often last much longer.

The active ingredient is hydrogen or carbamide peroxide in a glycerin base. If you know or think you may have any allergies or have had an adverse reaction to this ingredient, you cannot undergo this treatment. As with any treatment, there are benefits and risks. The benefit is that teeth can be whitened fairly quickly and simply. The risk is that this is a treatment that requires continued use of the peroxide solution. Research indicates that using peroxide to whiten teeth is safe. There is new research indicating safety for use on soft tissues (i.e., gums, cheeks, and tongue).

Tooth sensitivity to cold may appear immediately or after a few days. This is usually mild and temporary. If this occurs, refrain from using the whitening treatment for 1 to 2 days or apply sensitive toothpaste to the trays provided.
