Scientific literature clearly demonstrates that diabetes is a highly significant risk factor for periodontitis. It has also been observed that if diabetes is not well controlled, this risk is higher and periodontitis is more severe. It has also been found that patients with poorly controlled, long-standing diabetes are more prone to relapse and tooth loss during the periodontal maintenance phase. Individuals with poorly controlled diabetes, whether type 1 or 2, both adults and children, should be considered at risk for periodontitis and are advised to visit a dentist to assess their periodontal status.
